The Long Hot Summer by Kathleen MacMahon

Long hot summerA family story set in Dublin, seen through the eyes of nine members from three generations of the MacEntree family.

The book works because of the way the different stories are woven together to form one story. Included between the chapters are press cuttings about the different family member whose story follows.

There is depth to the novel, each character providing some back story which explains where they are now and how they got to that point in their life. The characters are really well written, making you feel some sympathy for all of them, but also not necessarily liking them.

I really enjoyed reading this and will be looking for others by Kathleen MacMahon.

For those who have read all the Maeve Binchy books!
