Mr Penumbra’s 24-hour bookstore by Robin Sloan

penumbraA really enjoyable read: essentially a love-letter to geeks. Our hero take a job in a bookstore which turns out to be more than a little mysterious. Is it just his teenage love of fantasy books & roleplaying which is leading him to see the magical in the everyday or is there really something odd going on?

Throw in computer programming, data visualisation, museums, laser-cutters, a mysterious book-cult, several mysterious old men and women, a beautiful and wonderfully clever love interest with an obsession about immortality and this is very nearly my perfect book (I think a few more mentions of public libraries would have got it that elusive 5th star!).

Peculiarly heart-warming.
