Half Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan

Half Blood Blues

Half Blood Blues

This deceptively simple book appears on the face of it to relate the story of a jazz band in wartime Berlin & Paris. It is only as one reads on that the underlying complexity of the book becomes clear.

While the wartime setting & the race of the characters provides the bones of the book, the tone and the real meat of the thing is much more concerned with the nature of memory and relationships.

The overwhelming feeling I am left with is of one of sadness and sympathy for the characters- no matter how flawed and unreliable they may be.
