Written as a memoir by the now elderly Lady Trent, this book is something special. As a young woman, Isabella has a rebellious spirit and a fascination for finding out how things worked, not least the dragons who inhabit this otherwise recognisably Victorian landscape.
Sadly the customs of the times do not allow women to pursue such passions and the life of a scholar is closed to her. Expected to marry and run a household, her chances of happiness seem limited until her father produces a list of eligible bachelors with large libraries.
Suffice to say, our heroine finds happiness and greater adventures than she dared imagine.
A wonderful read that manages to be at once a tribute to early feminists (and female explorers) and a thrilling and successful fantasy.
