The casual vacancy by J.K. Rowling

The Casual VacancyThis book has been lingering on my ‘to read’ list for rather a long time. I loved the Harry Potter books, and even got round to reading The Cuckoo’s Calling before this one (that’s another great book,  by the way). The subject of parish council finagling didn’t quite interest me enough to get me to read it. But I’ve finally done it! And I did enjoy it.

It’s a very dark and bitter read, maybe there is a hint of writing the Harry Potter out of her system. Certainly there’s a strong contrast between the titanic battles between good and evil in the Potter books and the petty amorality of almost everyone in this one. But there’s a lot of fun to be had in disliking almost every single character.
