The Uninvited Guests by Sadie Jones

uninvitedA wonderful piece of gothic froth, one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read in some time.

Set in Edwardian times in a country house- the beloved crumbling pile of so much fiction- we meet the Torringtons. Beautiful, distant Charlotte, mother of the lovely Emerald, the moody, dashing Clovis and the somewhat ignored ‘Smudge’. Charlotte has recently remarried  after the tragic death of the childen’s much-loved father and the children have not accepted their one-armed step-father.

Sadly, money has run out and the Torringtons are set to lose their house if the step-father’s trip to seek a loan is not successful. The story is set over the course of one night – with the step-father away and the family preparing to celebrate Emerald’s birthday. The happy event is disrupted when a train crashes nearby and the family are expected to take in the  survivors.

After this, events take a wholly unexpected turn… I shall say no more so as not to spoil your surprise. Read it!
