The beekeeper’s apprentice by Laurie R King

beekI loved this. The central characters are Mary Russell- a clever, orphaned 15 year old, planning to go to Oxford to study, but spending the last years under the guardianship of her malevolent aunt – and an eccentric retired beekeeper she meets walking on the Sussex Downs…

Yes, of course, that retired beekeeper is indeed Sherlock Holmes and he becomes her tutor and confidant. Mary brings her considerable intelligence and talents to bear on the cases they begin to tackle together and before long a new crime-fighting duo is born.

A cracking thriller and a beautiful character piece- Mary is wholly believable and a wonderful creation. I’m just this second about to reserve the next book in the series…
