The colour of milk by Nell Leyshon

colourThis is such a beautifully written little book.

It’s 1831 and 15-year-old Mary begins the difficult task of telling her story. She leads a harsh life working on her father’s farm, the youngest of three sisters – a disappointment her father has never accepted. When the local vicar’s wife is ill and needs help, Mary’s father sends her to stay at their home until she is no longer needed. Mary must get used to this new life.

Mary’s voice is unusual – forthright, naive and honest. Her story will haunt you! Highly recommended.
