The host by Stephenie Meyer

The host

This was a re-read for me. I’d read it soon after finishing her Twilight series, and this was very different. Not a vampire in sight!

The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. Wanderer, an invader, has been given Melanie’s body but the former tenant is refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away.

Wanderer, the invading ‘soul’ who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves – Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she’s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

To be honest, I’d forgotten just how good this story was! It took a while to understand this future world, but basically it’s a romance in a similar vein to the Twilight series. Here we have a woman (or is that two?) and her relationship with the two men – one who resents her and the other who loves the ‘new’ Melanie.  Give it a try – I think you’ll like it!
