The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

falconDashiell Hammett pretty much invented single-handed the genre of hard-boiled detective fiction.

If you’ve enjoyed books or films with troublesome dames, bitter detectives and twisty plots, this is the book which started it all off.

All those things are here in spades. Our laconic hero is commissioned by a young woman to find her missing sister,  but of course it doesn’t turn out to be that simple… and it isn’t long until the body count is rising.
