Diving Belles by Lucy Wood

divingA magical collection of short stories by a wonderful new author. This is certainly one of my favourite books of the year so far. Each story is perfectly self contained with a heartbeat all of their own: I find some collections of short stories can be insufficiently engrossing, but the distinct world created by each of these stories is exceptional.
The author isn’t afraid of the power of magic and mystery to transport us and uses story settings which could seem trite in less skilled hands (a nursing home for witches, the son of a giant struggling to cope with being normal sized) but the real magic of the stories is the way she finds the human feelings at the heart of every story.
