Queen of Kings by Maria Dahvana Headley

QKA very satisfying slice of dark fantasy. I admit, the cover really doesn’t promise too much, except for that tantalising quote from Neil Gaiman. A colleague at Tuckswood library said that she’d read it and really enjoyed it, so I thought I’ d give it a try…

.. and discovered a very well-written historical fantasty, centering around Cleopatra, her love for Mark Antony ad their conquest by the Roman Emperor Augustus. Not content with this, the author weaves in a spellbinding cast of historical figures, Roman, Greek and Egyptian gods, and witches and sorcerers from world-wide mythology.

This sounds like something of a mish-mash, but it is handled very well and results in a great story. It’s not one to try if you don’t like fantasy (you certainly need to be able to suspend disbelief), but if you’ve enjoyed any fantasy or paranormal romance, dive in.
