Jack the Lad and Bloody Mary by Joseph Connolly

Nothing about this book is easy or straight-forward, from the writing style to the decisions the characters have to take.

Set in world war two and following the lives of a small group of working class individuals; written almost entirely in dialogue and stream of consciousness, constantly switching viewpoints and timelines, this is a shatteringly good book… certainly a strong contender for the best novel I’ve read this year.

Massively concerned with the class system and the chances and choices we all have in life, the book manages to make huge illuminating pronouncements disguised as the lightest of throwaway lines.

It’s a tough read, with some dark and bloody deeds and some truly evil characters- but don’t let that put you off.

In summary: Genius! Read it.
