Bareback by Kit Whitfield

Ooh, this is an interesting one! I picked it up (I admit it) because the title made me snigger. Then I spotted the full moon on the cover and a mention of werewolves on the back & thought there was a good chance it might be shockingly bad (I have a thing about shockingly bad books with werewolves in).

Closer inspection of the cover yielded “extraordinary” from Kate Atkinson – well, that’s not necessarily a straight-forward compliment – & comparisons with 1984 and The Handmaid’s Tale. Now thoroughly intrigued, it came home with me.

I uncovered a really fascinating read. I can’t really explain what about it was so striking, nor say much about the plot without spoiling for you the sense of slow discovery I felt when I read it. But this is a superb book with a great deal to say about privilege, difference & how we treat those we fear. Seriously worth a read.
